The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) aims to support the well being of health workers. Simmons University School of Nursing was accepted as part of the inaugural cohort in NAM’s Change Maker Campaign for Health Workforce Well-Being.

Associate Professor of Practice and Director of Advanced Practice - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Sonya Cox is leading the initiative for the School of Nursing, in collaboration, with leadership. Dean Heather Shlosser and Teaching Professor and School of Nursing Chair Chaluza Kapaale worked with Cox to craft a mission statement that aligns with NAM’s Campaign, stating the School of Nursing’s commitment to enriching the lives of students, faculty, and staff.

“Self Care and wellness is a part of who I am,” says Cox. “I see these touchpoints within Simmons, where we address [these issues] in and out of the classroom. To be recognized on a national platform is great, given that it’s what we already value.”

Assistant Professor of Practice and Chair of Graduate Programs Naila Russell echoes this sentiment. “Being a part of this inaugural coalition reinforces the commitment we’ve had, since day one, to the well being of our students and graduates,” says Russell. In the fall, initiatives will be planned to address this issue and contribute to heightened awareness.
