Recognized for providing exceptional school administrator preparation, our innovative, cohort-based program incorporates the best practices of some of the state's most highly accomplished education leaders, including principals, superintendents, curriculum leaders, and consultants.
With an emphasis on applied theory, our hands-on curriculum encourages students to reflect on and improve their personal leadership style. Students work closely with faculty mentors who draw on their experience as professional educators and administrators. Seminars and projects allow students to develop their managerial and leadership strengths in areas such as decision making and problem solving, collaborative learning communities, conflict management and negotiation, school safety, budget planning, and teacher evaluation and supervision. Each student participates in a carefully designed, school-based, administrative practicum or internship that addresses his or her professional goals.
The Cohort Model
Most Educational Leadership students participate in a cohort of 15 to 20 educators during their studies. The cohort model allows students to exchange ideas, best practices, and diverse perspectives in a supportive community. Educational Leadership students are from urban and suburban school districts, including public, private, charter, and independent schools. Many are new teachers who have demonstrated leadership skills, while others bring more than 20 years of experience. All say the cohort helps them build a strong collegial network that continues to offer personal and professional support beyond graduation.
Participants complete a 38-credit course of study as a cohort, leading to a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.), with preparation for licensing as a supervisor/director, assistant principal, or principal at the elementary, middle, or secondary school level. Those who already have a master's degree may pursue an additional master's degree or a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (C.A.G.S.). Most students enter the program in August and finish in 21 months. The course schedule accommodates working professionals, with classes offered during the summer, on weekdays in the late afternoon/evening during the school year, and on weekends.
M.S.Ed. candidates must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, prior teacher licensure, and successful teaching experience at a public, independent, charter, or parochial school. C.A.G.S. candidates must meet the same requirements and also have a master's degree.
