Getting Started at SSW

Welcome to the Simmons School of Social Work community. We look forward to working with you throughout your social work education. Prior to classes commencing, you will receive important information from the SSW by email and U.S mail. We have also posted this information here on the Entering Students website. Students should become thoroughly familiar with the content and be sure to check email ( and this site regularly for current information. Please use this Getting Started at SSW Check List to ensure you have completed all necessary items before the beginning of the semester.

Getting Started at SSW Checklist

Activate your Simmons Account for email and registration

Schedule meeting with the Field Department immediately after you deposit (Full-time and Advanced Standing Program students only)

Register for classes (registration begins Friday, December 5, 2014) Please be certain to consult the sample program plans and to read all the sections on the Registration Information tab before registering for classes and ordering books.

Statistics course (if required, must be completed before classes commence)

Writing Assessment (for students beginning in the Fall semester only)

Information Literacy Orientation Program, SW402

Pre-Course readings (complete before classes commence)

Standards for Professional Practice (read, sign and return at Orientation)

Required Reading Prior to Classes

Standards for Professional Practice

All entering students are required to read the SSW Standards for Professional Practice which will be discussed at the new student orientation. You should bring a signed copy to the Standards to Orientation.

Statistics Requirement

Simmons SSW requires that all students entering the program have completed an introductory statistics course at least at the undergraduate level.

Information Literacy Orientation Program

All students must complete a 0 credit information literacy course, SW402.

Writing Requirement (Fall Entry)

After you register, but before you start classes, you will need to complete an online writing assessment. Don't worry—this isn't a test, and you won't be graded on it. The purpose of the assessment is to identify your writing strengths and help early on. Detailed information about the assessment will be mailed to you in early July, after you register for classes.
