An extremely valuable career resource for graduate students is the Simmons alumnae/i population. By speaking with alumnae/i you can learn about career choices, career paths, get an inside look at the current job market and your field, contact them for informational interviews, and more. Whether you are searching for an internship or field placement, a full-time job, or just exploring career options, you should consider tapping into the many services and resources the Simmons alumnae/i community offers. The following outlines some of those resources.
Simmons Hiring Simmons
Simmons' online job board, CareerLink, carries hundreds of internship and job opportunities, with typically 40-50 new postings per week. These are from employers specifically seeking to hire Simmons students. Within CareerLink, Simmons alumnae/i can post openings under the "Simmons Hiring Simmons" feature, so that you know a job is coming from a Simmons alum (or parent). When you go into "Job Search" on CareerLink, select "Job Posted by Simmons Alum or Parent?" and select "Yes" to see a list of these postings.
Keep an eye on the Career Events calendar. There may be specific alumnae/i networking events listed, but you will also find Simmons alumnae/i recruiting at career fairs, speaking on career panels, doing mock interviews, and appearing at many other types of career-related programs. Again, these are all terrific opportunities for you to connect with Simmons alums, who are here to help.
Simmons LinkedIn Group
Prefer networking virtually? Then check out the Simmons College group on LinkedIn. All you need is a Simmons affiliation and your own LinkedIn profile. Apply to the administrator to join the group. Once admitted, stay up to date with member posts, discussion groups, job opportunities, and just use it for networking. It is a tremendous resource -- more professionals use LinkedIn than any other online professional networking resource.
Alumnet is the Simmons alumnae/i website. It is your gateway to an alumnae/i community full of rich information and resources. You can visit it at any time.
Upon graduation, you will stay up-to-date if you are registered on Alumnet (see below). You will receive important information via the monthly Simmons E-News e-mail newsletter, including event information and many other non-career related benefits.
You can also link to the Simmons College Alumnae/i social networking sites such as the Simmons Alumnae/i group on Facebook and the Simmons LinkedIn group discussed above.
Alumnet Online Directory
As a Simmons alum you can also have access to the Simmons Alumnae/i Directory to search for alums that can provide career advice and guidance, find and network with alums that live and work in an area of interest to you, etc. Registration is required.
To register for Alumnet and the online directory, visit My Alumnet, then choose "Register" and use your Simmons ID number to continue. Sign up with your permanent e-mail address (do not use your "simmons.edu" e-mail; instead use a permanent account such as GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.). For any questions, contact email@example.com or 800-831-4284.
Graduate School Alumnae/i Groups
Finally, you should be aware of the alumnae/i networking groups and other alumnae/i activities within your specific school or program, where the affiliations and bonds are often at their strongest. Many of the schools maintain their own listserv of career opportunities, events, and other information to keep their alums up to date. As you get closer to moving from Simmons student to Simmons alum, contact your school's administration to learn more.
Career Toolkit for Graduate Students
The purpose of the Career Toolkit is to assist you in your career planning. Whether you are unsure of your career direction or need help with your job search, you will find the resources you need to begin your preparation.
