Promising Pals

Download the Promising Pals Handbook.

Almost 300 Simmons Graduate students, Staff, Faculty and Alumni are pen pals with a middle school students through the Promising Pals program at the James P. Timilty School in Roxbury, MA.

The program highlights literacy and mentoring, by giving students at the Timilty School an opportunity to correspond with professionals from Simmons and the surrounding community.

Promising Pal Participants commit to the following:

  1. Be a pen pal with a 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student.
  2. Exchange at least 4 letters between December and May.
  3. Pals and Students will each receive a short story or article to read. Read the assigned text and discuss it with your student in your letters.
  4. Meet your pal at the Pal Breakfast hosted by the Timilty School (Attendance at this event is required, as the students are very disappointed not to have their pal attend the breakfast.)

Registration to be a Pal begins in October. Pal slots are limited and fill up quickly.  If you have questions, please contact the promising pals coordinator at or at the Scott/Ross Center (617-521-2245).
