Requirements and Deadlines

Master's Degree Candidates

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. All grade point averages are considered, but a B (3.0) average or higher is preferred. In general, applicants are expected to submit a completed application file that includes the following:

  • A completed online application or Application Form
  • Non-refundable application fee of $35 (payable to Simmons College)
  • Official college transcripts from every college or university attended. Must include degree conferral
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Essay or statement of purpose
  • TOEFL scores, if English is not the applicant's first language
  • Current résumé

Additional requirements vary by program. Some programs require official GRE, MAT, or MTEL scores. Requirements for essays, letters of recommendation, and an interview also vary. Application Deadlines

The College of Arts and Sciences has a rolling admission policy. Apply early for maximum consideration for admission and financial aid. To meet priority application deadlines, completed application files should be submitted by May 1 for summer session, August 1 for the fall semester, and December 15 for the spring semester. Admission may be deferred for up to two semesters, after which applicants must reapply.

Non-Degree Enrollment Option

If you are unsure about enrolling in a graduate program, or just want to advance your educational experience, non-degree study at Simmons is the best option for you. As a non-degree student, you may enroll in up to two graduate-level courses (eight credits) before formally applying to a degree program. Find out more about our non-degree option.

Transfer Credit

Under special circumstances, a student may receive credit (maximum of 8 credits) for graduate work completed at another accredited institution. Students must complete a Petition for Transfer of Credit and submit it to the program director for approval and processing at the time of enrollment.

Doctoral Studies Candidates

Candidates must hold a Master's or higher degree from a related field. In addition, a completed application file must include the following:

  • A completed online application or Application Form
  • A current résumé that discusses employment and volunteer experiences
  • A non-refundable application fee of $80 (payable to Simmons College)
  • Official Transcripts from every college and university attended since the completion of high school, including official transcripts from all study-abroad experiences.
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • Interview
  • Analytical writing sample (thesis chapter, presentation, literature review, etc. Not to exceed 10 pages)
  • Program-specific additional requirements
