Dr. Furtado has been in education for the past thirty-seven years. He graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1973 with a Bachelor's degree in Social Studies and a minor in secondary education. In 1976 he graduated from Bridgewater State College with a Masters of Arts in Teaching. For both his bachelor's and master's work he was accepted into Phi Alpha Theta (the International Honor Society of History).

Dr. Furtado received a PhD in 1997 from LaSalle University with his doctoral dissertation work on the Massachusetts Education Reform Law of 1993. He was instrumental in the development of the principal's licensure program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. In 2008 Dr. Furtado assisted in co-authoring the dropout bill sponsored by Representatives Stephen Canessa and John Quinn.

He has presented nationally at the Association of Teacher Educator's conference on such topics as: "Attracting and Retaining Good Teachers", "Effective Mentoring" and "Leadership in the 21st Century". In 2009 he was asked to develop the new doctoral program in Education Leadership at Simmons College. Dr. Furtado was appointed as the director of the program and a Professor of Practice.
