Master Planning for Preservation of Historical Collections, Town of Hingham, Hingham, MA

DUTIES: The Town of Hingham, MA seeks proposals from qualified consultants to prepare a master plan for access to and preservation of the Town's historical collections.  The Town reserves the right to reject any and all proposals.

Exhibits Preparator (Conservator 1), Yale University, New Haven, CT

QUAL: Master's degree in fine art, industrial design, conservation, museum studies, or other closely related field, and one year relevant professional exhibits preparation or conservation experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in mount or exhibit design and/or conservation treatment, as demonstrated by a portfolio of work. Preferred: Experience with matting and framing; Experience working with book and paper objects in a library or archives setting; Museums studies background or museum experience.

Thorough, demonstrated knowledge of the display and mount-making techniques and procedures, as demonstrated through previous relevant experience in a research, academic institution or museum. Thorough, demonstrated knowledge of the materials used to construct displays, mounts, as well as artists' materials and techniques. Familiarity with conservation principles and techniques. Knowledge of the organization and administrative policies and procedures of libraries and archives and/or museums. Strong communication and analytical skills; the ability to work independently and with others. Ability to excel in a rapidly changing and dynamic team environment. Strong computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, database, e-mail and calendar applications. Preferred: Experience using design software (such as Publisher); MS Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and SharePoint.

General Purpose
Reporting to the Chief Conservator, the Exhibits Preparator is involved in all aspects of exhibition preparation and installation for changing/temporary exhibits. Works with the curatorial staff and guest exhibits curators to design, plan, and install books and other library materials in the various exhibition spaces at Sterling Memorial Library, including Manuscripts & Archives, Haas Arts Library Special Collections, and the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library.

Responsibilities
Works with exhibit curators to plan and execute exhibitions in various Library venues. Reviews materials with curator/librarian and assigned conservator before exhibit to determine display requirements and preservation or conservation treatment needs. Constructs and/or assembles mounts for materials going on exhibit. Coordinates the mounting and installation of exhibits with curators/librarians and any outside contractors. Supervises the work of Library staff involved in exhibit installation and label production to ensure that standards are met. Upholds and communicates standards for safe exhibition practice. Maintains central schedule for exhibit timetables. Works closely with Library communication and publicity staff promoting exhibits and coordinating related events (tours, lectures, receptions, etc.). Maintains exhibit documentation (electronic and paper files) such as object inventories, design aids, templates, and other exhibits related paperwork. Works with Preservation Field Services Librarian ensure that in-house exhibition environments meet preservation standards. Assists in the maintenance of lab equipment and supplies. Organizes and oversees inventory of reusable cradles and mounts. Tracks exhibits-related statistics. Participates in professional organizations to stay current in standards and practices in exhibits, loans, and preparatory activities. Performs other duties as assigned. Assists with disaster recovery operations following standard recovery procedures. May be required to work at West Campus location in West Haven, CT.

SALARY: Band I - Salary Grade 20 Schedule: Part-time, 20-24 hours per week during standard work week (M-F 8:30 — 5:00) Duration: Fixed, 3 years from date of hire, with possible continuation. Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.
