Applying for a Job
Resumes allow job seekers to showcase accomplishments, education, experience, and specialty skills. The following resources supplement the comprehensive career planning guides by offering samples, essential keywords, specialized librarian resume services, and electronic resume tips.

Available year-round, the American Library Association's (ALA) New Members Round Table (NMRT) resume review service is available via email NMRT to all ALA members, as well as ALA midwinter meeting and annual conference attendees. About 20 volunteer, experienced librarians in a variety of specialty areas from across the nation critique resumes and covers letters through email. The reviewers have often been involved in library search and hiring committees. Although users of the service will receive expert librarian feedback about their resume and cover letter, it can take up to a month for the reviewer to respond with comments. For those seeking to use the service at an ALA meeting or conference, a schedule of about 45 reviewers will be posted on the ALA site a few days prior to the conference. Reviewers suggest bringing a job description, if available, along with their cover letter and resume for review. Meeting and conference attendees are encouraged to make an appointment in advance with the ALA Resume Service upon arrival, but walk-ins are welcome. Regardless of ALA membership status, the resume service is free for all meeting and conference attendees. Expert librarians will review the resumes and cover letters on-site. The cost of the email service is included in ALA membership fees along an additional $10 charge to join NMRT. For school librarians, this book provides a collection of sample resumes and cover letters for teachers at all levels, including educational administrators and trainers. As an author of 30 career resource books and co-founder of the Resume Writing Academy, Wendy Enelow offers keyword, formatting, and writing advice for resumes and cover letters. A resume preparation questionnaire is also included in the appendices. A table of contents directs readers to the specific resume and cover letter strategies that are outlined in the book's 180 pages. Although the sample resumes are more current than the cover letter advice, the book also includes information about to develop an electronic resume. Human resources departments are now using resume keyword tools to filter candidates' applications. As a career resources columnist and president of Pathfinder Writing and Career Services, author Dawn Rasmussen provides excellent, concise advice about how to effectively include specific keywords to increase awareness of resumes online among prospective employers. The short article features several useful referral sites and online tools that can applied to a variety of professions. Special features include suggested keywords for those seeking information technology jobs, among other professions.

Considered a "must have" resource by the Library Journal, the book provides worksheets that guide how to write and format an effective resume. As a nationally certified resume writer for more than 18 years, author Evelyn Salvador emphasizes how to use targeted keywords, personal branding, and online resources to attract prospective employers' attention. The 304 page book includes a table of contents to help direct readers to specific topics, as well as a summary of how to use the book. An accompanying CD-ROM provides resume templates for easy formatting. The book and CD-ROM are available in paperback for about $14 on Amazon.
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
A curriculum vitae (CV) is appropriate for professionals and doctoral students seeking academic, research, or consultant positions. Unlike a two-page resume, a CV can be up to 25 pages as it will include publications, poster presentations, and other achievements. In addition to reviewing Simmons College GSLIS faculty CVs online for suggestions, below are additional resources for review:

As an award-winning teacher and associate director of the University of Iowa's career services department, author Will Coghill-Behrends has created a humorous, well-written, and comprehensive CV style guide. Updated information about international and digital CVs, as well as ethical guidelines are included. The excellent style guide provides detailed formatting, color, font, and content guidelines. A section about how to transform your CV into a resume is also included. A table of contents directs readers to specific topics and sample cover letters according to field. Special features include a library and information science CV sample on page 228, along with a variety of samples from related fields, such as literacy education, literacy studies, computer science, and technology. The book is available in paperback for about $23 on Amazon.

Although the book has not been updated since 2008, The Academic Job Search contains relevant information about creating CVs, portfolios, additional application materials, as well as provides a variety of CV samples for those seeking faculty and non-faculty positions in all types of academic disciplines. As directors of the University of Pennsylvania's career services, authors Miller Vick and Furlong provide comprehensive job searching information that would apply to any job seeker's search, such as networking, interviewing, and salary negotiations tips. Special features include advice about current topics, including: job search issues for pregnant candidates, work gaps in a CV, as well as challenges faced by dual-career couples and international scholars. A chapter about alternative options to academic jobs is also added. In addition to a table of contents that provides direction about specific topics, expectations about the hiring process and a timetable for applying for academic positions are also included.

Career expert Louise Kursmarck and bestselling author Michael Farr know most people don't enjoy writing cover letters. While the authors claim it will take 15 minutes to compose a cover letter after following their well-written step-by-step guide, it will take longer to read the 183 page book. Four chapters are devoted to writing and using cover letters efficiently. The approach is tailored to writing letters for "people you know" and "people you don't know." A dozen sample letters are included. The remaining two chapters offer brief resume improvement and networking tips. The table of contents directs to areas of interest. While the latest edition of the book is available in the Beatley Library, the book can also be purchased for the Kindle or in paperback for about $10 on Amazon.

While the well-intended, widely circulated website aims to showcase "real" anonymous cover letters from "hired" librarians and archivists, Open Cover Letters has several quality control issues. As of November 2012, the site contains a database of about 60 sample anonymous cover letters with personal and employer information omitted. According to the website's author, Stephen Flynn, an emerging technologies librarian at Ohio's College of Wooster, the cover letters are not proofread. Although Flynn will check a library's website to confirm an applicant's employment a few weeks after receipt of a cover letter, employment confirmation works on an "honor system" as employers are not contacted for verification (personal communication, October 26, 2012). Flynn acknowledges that some letters contain grammatical typos, but he has not identified them. In addition, some letters do not conform to the formatting and style guides represented in other reputable style guides. The letters are categorized in the sidebar according to a variety of Wordpress "type of library" fields, including: academic, archives, health sciences, corporate, school, among others. Tags for job functions and applicant features, such as new graduate, administration, reference, digitization and other fields, are also included in the sidebar. Two to three cover letters are added monthly.

Author of the Complete Idiot's Guide to resume and cover letter writing, Susan Ireland has created a one-stop-shop website for creating effective resumes, cover letters, and thank you notes. The website provides eight, concise sequential steps to writing an effective cover letter. Each step provides a web link to more information about topics, including: prospective employer research, email cover letters, sales pitch, among others. Advice about including salary requirements is also included. The site features 50 sample cover letters. Free cover letter and resume templates and builders are available. Live chat, email, and phone support is offered from 6:00 a.m. (EST) to midnight seven days a week. Fee-based resume writing and career coaching services are also available.

While emails between friends may abandon proper punctuation and capitalization, professional correspondence still conforms to proper grammar and spelling rules. Since the majority of professional communications today are conducted occur over email, Virginia Tech's career services provides a concise, professional email etiquette guide. Although it does not contain a comprehensive writing email style guide, the website lists additional "netiquette" resources for more information.
