Dr. Mary Frances Zilonis Accepts K-12 Director Position at Wellesley Public Schools

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Franzilonisphoto.jpgDr. Mary Frances Zilonis has accepted a position as the K-12 Director of School Libraries for the Wellesley Public Schools. She has resigned as the GSLIS Director of the School Library Teacher Program (SLTP) and Professor of Practice, effective July 1, 2014.

As described in our InfoLink faculty profile, Zilonis was instrumental in GSLIS' School Library Teacher Program receiving distinction in the 2013 U.S. News and World Report rankings as one of the top ten school library programs in the nation. Starting her career at GSLIS as an adjunct faculty member in 1990, she was appointed Director of the SLTP in 2010. She developed and obtained Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) approval for the Instructional Technology Program, which provides DESE licensure and a Simmons post-master's certificate. In addition, the post master's School Library Teacher Licensure Program grew under her leadership. Among her many other initiatives, Zilonis updated the SLTP courses to meet the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requirements, as well as recruited recognized leaders such as Susan Ballard, past president of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and award-winning instructors, such as Linda Braun, to teach and share their expertise with Simmons GSLIS students.  The high quality of the graduates produced is attested to by their success in the job market.

Rachel Holden, Program Assistant for the School Library Teacher Program, and Facilitator for the Instructional Technology Program, will be available to help with students' needs. She can be reached by email at gslissltp@simmons.edu or by phone at 617-521-2895.

Simmons GSLIS wishes Zilonis all the best in her new position.
