Bubbles, Panics & Crashes: A Century of Financial Crises, 1830s-1930s
When: Thursday, November 26, 2009
Where: Baker Library, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA
Knowledge and Library Services, Harvard Business School is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition- "Bubbles, Panics & Crashes: A Century of Financial Crises, 1830s-1930s," an exhibition organized by Baker Library Historical Collections. The exhibition will run from November 10, 2009 through May 3, 2010 in the North Lobby, Baker Library | Bloomberg Center.
This exhibition takes the first anniversary of the subprime mortgage crisis as an occasion to revisit four financial crises that occurred in an earlier, particularly volatile century of economic history. In 1837, 1873, 1907, and 1929, asset price bubbles burst, shattering public confidence and devastating financial securities, and credit markets in the United States and around the world. In most cases, full recovery took years. These four crises were so far-reaching that they affected virtually everyone involved in the U. S. market economy. Yet each was so complex that their causes and consequences remain subjects of debate generations later.
Visit the accompanying website, http://www.library.hbs.edu/hc/crises/ , to learn more about the history of financial crises, to find materials in Baker Library Historical Collections that could support further research, and to view some of the items featured in this exhibition.
Please contact Baker Library Historical Collections at histcollref@hbs.edu, if you would like to request a copy of the exhibition catalog.

The library is dead. Long live the library! The rebirth of libraries in the 21st century
Tuesday, December 8, 2009, 9am — 4pm
MIT Media Lab — Bartos Theater, Cambridge, MA
Library closures, slashed budgets, user apathy — everything's online, right? It's a story many of us have heard too often or experienced ourselves, especially with the recent downturn in the economy. But many libraries are re-inventing themselves, offering new services and transforming into very different entities while still at heart performing the same role they always have — helping communities connect with information.
Come to this NEASIS&T program to hear:
- How changes in publishing are driving changes in libraries. How can we radically change an ancient institution that evolved from providing shared print copies into one that effectively provides online content (that we often don't even own). It's time to get past the kludges in our processes and organizational structures and embrace our future.
- What it takes to be a librarian these days. What skills and interests are necessary? In 10 years will we be librarians or technologists?
- Success stories from libraries that have radically changed their roles and services.
- How to design your library around user expectations and keep your organization relevant.
We'll provide breakfast, lunch, and network access for all!
Speakers:
- John Palfrey, Vice Dean for Library and Information Resources at Harvard Law School & Co-Director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society
- Steven Bell, Associate University Librarian for Research & Instructional Services at Temple University's Paley Library
- Shana Kimball, Publications Manger at the Scholarly Publishing Office of the University of Michigan Library
- Marguerite Avery, Senior Acquisitions Editor at The MIT Press
- Cyril Oberlander, Associate Director of Milne Library at the SUNY College at Geneseo

The conference keynote speaker is Rachel Singer Gordon, webmaster of LISjobs.com, the largest library career site and job database, and consulting editor at Information Today Inc., Books Division. Rachel's talk, "Career Building in a Down Economy," will help librarians focus on what they can do to keep themselves moving forward professionally in a down economy. While professional literature discusses what librarians can do to help their communities and patrons, it does not give much information as to what librarians can do to help themselves. Rachel will address the ways in which the economy affects librarians professionally, how to control reactions and frustration, how to deal proactively with current events, and how to move forward effectively in tough economic times.
Other speakers include: Tom Peters, TAP Information Services; Christi Confetti Higgins, Sun Microsystems; Cindy Hill, Hill Information Consulting; Morgan Cadwalader, Alliance Library System; Kitty Pope. Alliance Library System; Marianne Steadley, University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science and more!
