Maurice Sendak was among the most prolific, beloved, and sometimes controversial children's authors/illustrators of the 20th century. In his memory, the Library has created a Sendak-themed book display -- come check out his headstrong, bossy characters, his masterful illustrations, and his "luminous worlds, at once lovely and dreadful." Stand Against Racism
Simmons College recently hosted an all day STAND on our campus to promote anti-racism and social justice. Stand Against Racism is a movement of the YWCA that aims to eliminate racism by raising awareness through its annual day of organized events across the country. Individuals are invited to join any of the "Stands" where hundreds of thousands of people will take a Stand Against Racism. The Library has created a display in support of this event. National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month. To celebrate, the library has selected works from our collection featuring poets and poetry. The month-long celebration highlights achievements of American poets, encourages recognition of the importance of poetry, and increases the reading of poetry. April 8-14th is National Library Week. "National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. Chinese Calligraphy
The Library is proud to display the work of Simmons students from CHIN 260, Professor Alister Inglis's Chinese Calligraphy course. We have over a dozen examples of Chinese calligraphy, handwritten renderings of poetry from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), as well as books about calligraphy and the poetry and art of the Tang Dynasty. Professor Inglis has also allowed us to display some of his work. Downton Abbey
To celebrate the finale of Season 2 of Downton Abbey, come check out our Downton-themed display with books about the show, its time period, and setting. You'll find books on WWI, selected titles about British aristocracy in the early 20th century, and novels set around the same time period. Downton Abbey is a British television drama set in the early 1900s on the estate of the Grantham family. It follows the lives of the artistocrats and the servants who work and live there. The first series spans the two years before the Great War beginning with news of the sinking of the Titanic, which sets the story in motion. The second series covers the years 1916 to 1920 and focuses on World War I and women's rights. ...More »

Horn Book at Simmons
The Boston Globe--Horn Book Awards celebrate some of the best children's literature in three categories: Fiction and Poetry; Non-Fiction; and Picture Books. For the second year, Simmons is hosting a colloquium to bring together librarians, educators and children's literature professionals to examine the Boston Globe--Horn Book Award winners. Take a Stand Against Racism: Civil Rights Pioneers from 1828 to Present
Currently on display in Beatley Library, "Take a Stand Against Racism: Civil Rights Pioneers from 1828 to Present" highlights some of the influential people who sought to improve equality for all. Both well- and lesser-known pioneers are showcased: Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, John Brown, Earl Warren, Ella Baker, Maria Elena Lucas and more. And while you're in the Library, raise your voice in support of this cause by signing the Stand Against Racism pledge which is located by the book display. The Library invites you to see our newest display in honor of Banned Books Week. Come and check out our display of famous titles that have been banned such as Harry Potter, The Great Gatsby, Huckleberry Finn and On the Road. The display also features many favorites and classics from children's and young adult literature.
