Meeting with an Advisor

How to make an appointment:

Please call the Center for Academic Achievement at 617-521-2474, during normal business hours (8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday), to schedule an appointment with your academic advisor.  You may also email your advisor directly to set up an appointment.  We typically do not accept same day appointments, so please call to set up a time to meet with your advisor in advance.  Advising appointments are most productive when both the advisor and the student are prepared for the appointment.  Things to consider before meeting with your advisor:

  • What do you hope to get out of the advising session?
  • Which courses are you interested in taking? What subjects interest you the most? What subjects to you find most challenging?
  • What questions do you have about courses, prerequisites, or major requirements?
  • What are your academic and co-curricular interests?
  • Where do you see yourself after graduation?

Walk-in Advising:

Several times a year (including the days leading up to registration deadlines) the Office of Academic Advising & Support will have walk-in advising sessions.  These sessions provide access to academic advisors without making a prior appointment for brief questions in regards to:

  • Adding or dropping courses
  • Changing course sections
  • Major requirements
  • All-college requirements
  • Taking summer courses
  • Academic Performance
  • Placement exam results

For consultations requiring more in-depth conversations, it is recommended that students make an appointment with their advisors.

Advising Etiquette:

If you are unable to keep your appointment for any reason, please call to cancel and/or re-schedule. If you are running late, please call to notify the advising staff.  If you are more than 10 minutes late, you may be required to re-schedule your appointment. The academic advisors are involved in many activities at Simmons (including teaching) in addition to advising undergraduates.  Because of this, you may not be able to meet with your advisor on short notice, or receive an immediate email or phone reply.  Your advisor will get back to you as soon as possible.
