The Center for Academic Achievement (CAA) is integral to Simmons's academic advising system. Every year, the CAA is largely responsible for:
Matching traditional first-year students with academic advisors who share their expressed areas of interest.
- Assigning new transfer students and Dix Scholars to faculty advisors in their majors or interest areas. In addition, the CAA helps to ensure that advisors of Dix Scholars are typically senior faculty in their departments who are experienced in working with Dix Scholars.
- Assigning students who are undecided about their majors to faculty members whose knowledge of the curriculum and flexibility enable students to explore their interests.
Faculty who desire a more detailed explanation of Simmons's academic advising should consult the 2012-2013 Advising Resource Manual. Faculty Advising Resource Manual
Students who wish to learn more about their role in Simmons's advising process should consult the 2012-2013 Student Planner and Resource Manual.
As a special service to traditional first-year students and faculty advisors, the CAA provides Mid-Semester Progress Reports, which are issued by each course instructor. The Progress Report gives the academic advisor and the student positive comments and constructive criticism of the student's performance. If necessary, the CAA will also provide academic warnings, which may be issued by course instructors to undergraduates. In this case, CAA staff members will meet with undergraduate students to assist them with assessing their academic strengths and weaknesses. Through individual counseling on issues that influence their academic performance, the CAA gladly assists students with making a plan of action that will allow them to successfully meet their academic goals. In addition, should students need to change advisors, the CAA facilitates this transition.
Students who would like to change their faculty advisor or add an additional faculty advisor must submit a Change of Advisor Form to the CAA.
