Winston Tabb, a Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science Alumnus, Tapped for Post
BOSTON (January 27, 2010) — President Barack Obama nominated Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science alumnus Winston Tabb, to serve on the National Museum and Library Services Board. The nomination requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
Tabb, a 1972 graduate of Simmons's library and information science school, is the Sheridan Dean of University Libraries and Museums at Johns Hopkins University. Here, he leads the university's entire system of libraries, directs the Sheridan Libraries, and oversees the Homewood Museum and the Evergreen Museum & Library. Prior to joining Hopkins, Tabb served at the Library of Congress for more than 30 years, ultimately serving as associate librarian.
The National Museum and Library Services Board is the advisory body for the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The institute works to create strong libraries and museums through programming at the national level. Board members are presidentially appointed and Senate-confirmed members of the general public who have demonstrated expertise in, or commitment to, library or museum services.
This is the second time in recent months that a Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science graduate has been nominated for a national library post. In the fall, Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science graduate David S. Ferriero was confirmed as archivist of the United States National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
The nationally ranked Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science is one of the oldest and largest library and information science programs in the nation. Founded in 1899, Simmons College is a nationally recognized university located in the heart of Boston that includes an undergraduate college for women, and graduate programs for women and men in management, social work, health sciences, and library and information science.
