BOSTON (October 12, 2010) — The U.S. Senate recently voted to confirm Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) Instructor Mary Minow to serve on the National Museum and Library Services Board.
Minow joins two other members of the Simmons library and information science community who recently have been nominated for high-level government positions. GSLIS alumnus Winston Tabb also was named to the National Library Board, and alumnus David Ferriero was confirmed as archivist of the United States at the National Archives and Records Administration.
Minow is an attorney, consultant, and a former librarian and library trustee. She specializes in copyright, privacy, and free speech. She has consulted for the Library of Congress, the California State Library, and numerous other library organizations across the country. In addition to teaching digital copyright at the Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science, she also teaches asis an adjunct lecturer at the San Jose State School of Library Science. Minow currently serves on the board of the Electronic Privacy Information Center and chairs the Intellectual Freedom Committee of the California Library Association.
The National Museum and Library Services Board is the advisory body for the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The institute works to create strong libraries and museums through programming at the national level.
The nationally ranked Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science is one of the oldest and largest library and information science programs in the nation. Founded in 1899, Simmons College is a nationally recognized university located in the heart of Boston that includes an undergraduate college for women, and graduate programs for women and men in management, social work, health sciences, and library and information science.
