Peter Hernon teaches in the areas of evaluation of library services, research methods, and leadership. He is the author of more than 350 publications of which 52 are monographs. He is the 1999 ALA's Highsmith Award winner for the best book in library and information science (with Ellen Altman) and the 2010 ABC-CLIO/Greenwood Award for Best Book in Library Literature (with Robert E. Dugan and Danuta A. Nitecki). He is co-editor of Library & Information Science Research, former editor-in-chief of the Journal of Academic Librarianship, and founding editor of Government Information Quarterly. During the 1995-1996 academic year, Hernon served as a visiting professor in the Department of Library and Information Studies at Victoria University in New Zealand. In 1998, he returned to New Zealand to lecture and consult, and in 2002 he spent his sabbatical leave teaching there. He has also spoken in Britain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and South Africa. He has received two IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) Librarians for the 21st Century grants for the doctoral concentration in managerial leadership in the information professions.
