Digital Stewardship Certificate (Post Master's)
"Digital stewardship is an exciting field of study because it represents the future of libraries, archives, and museums. We've developed courses that focus on innovation and leadership for information professionals who want to play an effective role in managing digital projects and in shaping digital collections and services. Our students and faculty are addressing the big challenges in preserving society's digital heritage."
Peter Botticelli, MSI University of Michigan, PhD Univ. of Illinois, Professor and Program Director of the Digital Stewardship Certificate
The Digital Stewardship Certificate prepares our students to play leading roles in preserving and ensuring access to society's digital heritage. Active stewardship of digital assets is becoming central to the mission of archives, libraries, and museums, along with public and private organizations responsible for large data collections. With the rise of digital humanities and data-intensive research in the sciences, digital stewardship is also becoming a critical factor in advancing knowledge in all disciplines as well as in preserving digital culture for future generations.
To meet the acute need for more professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to manage digital projects and repositories, the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College has developed an innovative 15 credit (5 courses) curriculum that explores the full range of technical, organizational, and public policy issues involved in managing the whole lifecycle of digital information, from the point of creation through access and long-term preservation.
Digital stewardship represents an emerging interdisciplinary field of study and practice linking the information disciplines. Today, many information professionals view collaboration as a necessary factor in digital stewardship, enabling technologists, collection managers and curators to work together effectively. Collaboration in turn requires professionals to have advanced communication and project management skills along with expertise in working with collections.
Through the Digital Stewardship Certificate program, Simmons is committed to preparing our students for successful careers focused on digital collections and repositories. Our graduates are expected to play a vital role in shaping the information professions as they make the historic transition to the digital age.
