20th Century Art

4 sem. hrs. Prereq.: Students are strongly encouraged, but not required, to take ART 100, 141, or 142. Why did art change so radically at the beginning of the 20th century? This course explores the development of cubism, surrealism, abstraction, feminism, and other approaches to modern art by considering artists' responses to social, scientific, and technological changes of the period. Students will study the painting, sculpture, and photography as well as significant writings by 20th century artists to further an understanding of how and why artists turned away from many of the traditions of art history.
