Sociology of Education

4 sem. hrs. Prereq.: SOCI 101. Education majors are exempt from the prerequisite. Focuses on the contributions of sociological theories and research applied to an understanding of the structure and functions of educational systems in contemporary society. Topics include such areas as education and social stratification, student subcultures, and race and education. Service learning includes working collaboratively as a class with a sixth-grade class in a Boston public school.
