On Wednesday, March 27th, there will be a presentation of Breaking Through the Clouds: The First Women's National Air Derby at 6:30pm in C-101. This film is documents the inspiring story of 20 women who raced across America in 1929. After the screening, join us for a lively discussion of the film with Producer Heather Taylor!
This film presentation is sponsored by SGA, Simmons Student Finance Board, Simmons Cinematic Society, the Simmons PDIAC Grant "Diversity in Film Genres," the Department of Communications, The Graduate Program in Gender/Cultural Studies and the Department of Women's and Gender Studies.

Mitra Shavarini: Discussion of Desert Roots

On Thursday, March 28th from 4:00-5:00pm, Mitra K. Shavarini will be discussing her latest book, Desert Roots: Journey of an Iranian Immigrant Family. This deeply personal narrative chronicles her parents' remarkable journey to America and then back again to Iran. Dr. Shavarini will discuss the challenges of writing a memoir wen memories can be so flawed, as well as her perspectives on immigration. Please join the Departments of Modern Languages and Literatures, Women's and Gender Studies, and Sociology for this fascinating discussion.
Dr. Mitra K. Shavarini hold a doctorate from Harvard's Graduate School of Education. She is a lecturer in Peace, Conflict, and Coexistence Studies and Women's and Gender Studies at Brandeis University. Her work has appeared in Harvard Educational Review, Teacher's College Record, International Journal of Middle East Studies, and Women's Studies International Forum.

Global Reproductive Health: Access, Healing and Hope

On Thursday, March 28th, Brooke Sulahian and Mimi Johnson from Hope for Our Sisters, Inc will come to Simmons to share the film A Walk to Beautiful and discuss the problem of obstetric fistulas facing women in developing nations.
We will be gathering at 6:00pm on the fifth floor of the SOM Building, M501.

The Invisible War: Screening and Discussion

On Wednesday, April 3rd, we will be hosting a screening of The Invisible War. This documentary delves into the serious problem of sexual assault in the United States military. After the film, there will be a discussion led by a panel including: Becky Thompson of the Sociology Department, Diane Harriford from Vassar College, Crystal Rizzo, a graduate student in the Gender/Cultural Studies Program, and Renna Smith and Dorothy Paige, ROTC Cadets from Simmons College.
The film screening will take place in C101 at 6:30pm.
