Letter from the Vice President, Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer — Fiscal Year 2025
Simmons University’s financial statements are audited by CBIZ CPAs P.C. As in prior years, the University received an unmodified audit opinion, affirming that our fiscal year 2025 financial statements are presented fairly and free of material misstatement. Additional details can be found in the audited financial statements.
Fiscal year 2025 was a year of measured progress and financial resilience for Simmons University. The University closed the year with an operating deficit of $0.8 million after depreciation.
- Operating revenues were $159.7 million, an increase of $8 million from the prior year. Revenue growth was driven by higher gift and grant revenue, supplemental endowment distributions, and strong auxiliary income from leasing and parking. These gains helped offset continued pressure on student revenues, which declined by $9 million due to an $8 million reduction in online graduate program revenue.
- Operating expenses were $160.5 million, a decrease of $5.9 million from the prior year. The change was largely due to a $6.1 million reduction in payments to our online graduate program partner, which move in tandem with online graduate revenues. Other operating expenses remained well managed and were essentially flat year over year.
- To support operations and maintain liquidity, the University took an elevated draw totaling $29.1 million from its endowment, including both regular and Board-approved supplemental distributions. Despite this supplemental draw, the endowment ended the year at a strong $252.4 million, benefiting from $5.9 million in new gifts and $26.4 million in additional market value from investment gains.
Simmons University continues to operate within a higher education landscape marked by significant financial headwinds. However, the University is well positioned due to its strategic investments in the One Simmons campus transformation, growth in auxiliary revenue supported by our modern facilities and exceptional Boston location, disciplined expense management, and stabilization of student income trends that all contribute to a stronger financial foundation. The University continues to review its structure and academic offerings to ensure that it is highlighting its signature programs while also developing new and innovative offerings.
