Fellowships and Scholarships: Opportunities for Funding at Simmons

Throughout your undergraduate career at Simmons, you will have numerous opportunities to explore scholarly and creative passions, participate in paid, hands-on research experiences, present at national and international conferences, receive mentorship from faculty, pursue global experiences, and connect with community leaders, organizations, hospitals, and world-renowned research laboratories in the Boston area and beyond.

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (URF) offers a range of programs that support undergraduate academic and professional growth, including:

  • Barbara Lee Fellowship: Barbara Lee, an alumna of Simmons University, heads the Barbara Lee Family Foundation, whose mission is to move women into the political sphere. The Foundation has provided money to Simmons for the Barbara Lee Fellowship, which increases awareness of politics as a vocation for women. The call for applications occurs in October; students are notified of their placements by the first week of December. Seniors preferred, juniors considered.
  • Passionate Leaders Project: The Passionate Leaders Project (PLP) is a $3,000 award given to five to seven exemplary undergraduate students to pursue an independent research project, creative endeavor, community enterprise, or internship project of their own design and development. Applications are accepted in November of each year. Open to sophomores, juniors, an dseniors across all disciplines.
  • Senior Scholar Award: Sponsored by the Provost’s Office and the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, the Senior Scholar Award will be presented to six graduating seniors in recognition of outstanding scholarship and contribution to a field of study.
  • Summer Undergraduate Research Experience at Simmons: Summer Undergraduate Research Experience at Simmons (SURPASs) is a six-week cross-disciplinary program held from the end of May to the end of June, during which a cohort of 8 students conduct their own independent research projects under the guidance of individual faculty mentors. Scholars received a $3,500 stipend, a project budget of up to $1,000, and on-campus housing. Faculty mentors receive a $2,000 stipend. Open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
  • Faculty-Student Collaborative Fellowship: The Faculty-Student Collaborative Fellowship at Simmons is a competitive small-grant program that enables faculty to hire an undergraduate or graduate research fellow for the duration of a semester or an academic year. Applications must be prepared and submitted by a full-time faculty member at Simmons. Applications for the academic year are accepted from August to October.
  • Undergraduate Student Conference Fund: The Undergraduate Student Conference Fund provides up to $500 for undergraduate students to participate in an academic, research, or professional conference. Priority is granted to students who plan to present their work at a conference. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed on the 15th of each month from August to May. Open to all undergraduates.
  • Undergraduate Research & Creative Scholarship Fund: The Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship Fund provides up to $500 in support of student-initiated independent research and creative scholarship projects. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed on the 15th of each month from August to May. Open to all undergraduate
