Senior Associate Director for Teaching and Learning Sarah Cavanagh was interviewed for an article, “Fighting the Mental-Health Crisis Narrative” in the Chronicle of Higher Education. In the article, Cavanagh addresses the balanced approach to mental health issues offered in her book, Mind Over Monsters: Supporting Youth Mental Health With Compassionate Challenge (Beacon Press, 2023). She cautions that describing the current state of mental health as a crisis risks putting young people “on the alert for negative emotions,” as a sign of something wrong, as opposed to “negative emotions being part of the human experience and a signal that this is something that you are a little uncomfortable with.”
