As Senior Office Assistant for the Office of Undergraduate Advising and former Simmons Academic Mentor, Jenny Huynh '22 knows a thing or two about helping students navigate their academics. We asked Jenny for her expert tips and tricks to help Simmons students choose their major and narrow down their future career paths.
1. Connect with faculty and staff
Office hours are key! Don’t be afraid to reach out to your professors about any questions that you might have. They are here to support you and help you succeed.
Also, be sure to take advantage of the many resources we have on campus! My personal favorites are the Advising office and the Career Education Center.
2. Talk to upper-level students/peers
One of my favorite things about Simmons students is that they are always willing to help. Connecting with upper-level students and your peers can be intimidating, but there is a strong sense of community here at Simmons.
3. Meet with the Simmons Academic Mentors (SAMs)
As a former SAM, I was super excited to share my advice and tips with first-years and sophomores. SAMs are a wonderful resource on campus and they are super helpful when it comes to academic life!
4. Consider the classes/subjects you have not enjoyed
Process of elimination! We all have those courses and subjects we would never take again.
5. Explore a wide range of classes and programs on the Academic Planning Worksheet page
The Advising Office has Academic Planning Worksheets for each major/program. Looking at these sheets can help you narrow down the programs you’re interested in and get a sense of what courses you'll have to take.
6. Take a career/interest quiz
One of my favorite career quizzes is from CareerExplorer. It’s free and easy to navigate!
