Joanna Almeida, professor and Eva Whiting White Endowed Chair at Simmons School of Social Work, was quoted in a MedicalXpress article about her new study of factors impacting preterm birth in the Commonwealth.

The study, led by Almeida and faculty at Boston University School of Public Health, examined preterm births in Massachusetts. As the article states, “the social characteristics of a birthing parent's neighborhood is associated with their risk of experiencing an early delivery.” These social characteristics include access to educational, health, environmental, and socioeconomic resources.

"We need to address the inequitable distribution of resources and access to neighborhood opportunity in order to move the needle on racial and ethnic inequities in preterm birth,” said Almeida.
