Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women, and Sexuality
Simmons University’s membership in The Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women, and Sexuality (GCWS) provides students with opportunities to enroll through cross-registration in team-taught, interdisciplinary graduate seminar courses. The GCWS is designed to train new generations of feminist scholars and teachers, and prioritizes analyses of class, race, culture, ethnicity, and sexualities.
In GCWS courses, you will:
- explore cutting-edge, interdisciplinary scholarship informed by feminist methods
- consider the practical implications of social justice and feminist theories.
- receive crucial intellectual support alongside other students pursuing gender related work within the framework of the traditional disciplines.
- connect with graduate students interested in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality studies in a stimulating and supportive environment that encourages intellectual risk taking.
- forge ties with scholars at other institutions for conference panels and collaborative research.
- learn alongside students from each of the nine member institutions: Boston College; Boston University; Brandeis University; Harvard University; The Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Northeastern University; Simmons University; Tufts University; and University of Massachusetts Boston.
Simmons membership ins GCWS likewise offers all students networking opportunities beyond the classroom, particularly:
- the chance to help organize and present at student-run conferences
- access to GCWS sponsored events, workshops and symposiums which are held across the city of Boston.
Please note: All Simmons graduate students and advanced undergraduate students studying in a relevant field who wish to enhance their studies with additional gender-based coursework are eligible to apply to enroll in GCWS seminar courses.
Before applying, students are strongly encouraged to discuss with their academic advisor whether credits earned through GCWS can be applied towards their degree requirements.
Simmons students and faculty who are interested in learning more about opportunities available through Simmons’ membership in GCWS may contact Professor Denise Horn.
Questions about cross-registration through GCWS can be directed to Professor Suzanne Leonard, Graduate Program Director for Simmons’ MA in Gender and Cultural Studies program.
