How to Join a Themed Housing Community

Choosing to live in a Themed Housing Community will help you to express your individuality while building friendships and exploring your passions with a cohort of other students who share your interests.

First-year Students

Incoming first-year students can opt into a themed community when they apply for housing. The Housing application will provide a space to select which themed communities, if any, align with their interests. Students will then be selected to live in the communities based on availability.

Returning Students

Returning students will be able to apply to live in a themed community during room selection. The application opens in the Fall semester and closes in the Spring semester. Students will be selected based on the quality of their application in addition to availability. Once students are selected, students will be notified of their housing placement for the upcoming school year.

Themed Housing Application Process Timeline

  • Application opens in November
  • Application closes in February
  • Applications are reviewed in February and March
  • Themed Community Placement decisions are communicated in March

Process for Joining a Themed Housing Community as a Returning Student

  • Step 1: Apply using the Themed Housing Application.
  • Step 2: Themed Housing Applications will be reviewed by the Office of Residence Life professional staff team. Application essays will be reviewed on two criteria: Genuine interest in belonging to the community and as an upper-level student, what you would contribute to the community of interest. While we appreciate proper grammar and punctuation, Themed Housing Applications will not be reviewed based on these criteria. If you are interested in more than one community, you must complete an application for each one.
  • Step 3: Invitations will be sent to residents accepted into each Themed Housing Community on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. If you are not accepted, you will be notified and offered the opportunity to remain in the alternate pool. Should any resident decline their invitation, Residence Life will contact a member of the alternate pool with an invitation to join.
  • Step 4: If you are invited to join a community, you must accept or deny your invitation to live in the community by Friday, February 23, 2024. If you accept their place in the community, you will be placed into the community by ORL. You will not have a Room Selection Timeslot to choose out of the Themed Community.
  • Step 5: Anyone who is either accepted into a Themed Community or listed as an alternate must apply to Housing by Friday, March 1, 2024. Completing the Housing Application is a requirement for living in an Themed Housing Community.
