Scholarship, Research, and Sponsored Programs

The Center for Faculty Excellence supports faculty research, scholarship, and creative projects through both grants and sponsored programs support as well as through professional development programs and services. CFE also oversees research compliance, the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI), Research Misconduct, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC),and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). CFE’s professional development programs focus on a wide array of topics that support faculty in meeting their scholarship goals, such as building an interdisciplinary research community, celebrating scholarship, writing productivity, and writing successful grant proposals.

Apply for Funding

CFE staff is here to support you in submitting your proposal for external funding. All funding proposals, grant applications, agreements, renewals, contracts, and sub-awards require Simmons' institutional review and approval before submission. We recommend that you submit the required Application to Submit External Proposal at least 30 days ahead of the submission deadline. 

Submission Process step-by-step

Simmons University utilizes InfoReady for the review and approval process of external funding applications.

  1. Internal Simmons Review
  1. Application Submission to Sponsor
  • 2.1. Develop all application documents (applicant, CFE/Advancement)
    Prepare a draft of all sponsor-required scientific, administrative, and financial documents.
  • 2.2. Send all drafts to CFE or Advancement
    No later than 2 weeks before the deadline (applicant).
  • 2.3. Drafts Review (CFE/Advancement/Peer Reviewers)
    Completed within a week to deadline. Revisions sent to applicant.
  • 2.4. Final Documents Review
    Applicant submits all final document to CFE or Advancement no later than 1 week before the deadline.
  • 2.5. Submission
    No later than 1 business day before the deadline. Federal applications are submitted by CFE, non-federal are submitted by the applicant or Advancement (depending on sponsor's requirements)
  1. Award or Contract
  • 3.1. Award Notification (CFE/Advancement, applicant)
    Shared with Department Head, Dean, Operations, Finance, EFPC.
  • 3.2. Award Set-up.
    Worktag is created in Workday and a kick-off meeting is scheduled. (Controller's office: Heather Davis). Project is managed by the applicant, with administrative support of CFE, Advancement, Operations, and Finance. Contracts are signed by an Authorized Organizational Representative.

Grants Management

CFE staff are here to assist researchers with any questions and institutional approvals for their grants, including - award agreement review, negotiations and acceptance, sub-awards, re-budgeting, and no-cost extensions. 

The Post Award and Grant Accounting Specialist can assist with financial questions, projections, expenditure monitoring, sub-award and invoice payments, salary allocations, effort certifications, additional compensation,cost transfers, financial reporting, close out, and audit.

In accordance with federal regulations, all research involving human subjects conducted at Simmons University or conducted by Simmons University faculty, staff, or students must be reviewed and approved by the University's Institutional Review Board (IRB).

In accordance with Federal regulations, Simmons University has a responsibility to manage, reduce, or eliminate any actual or potential conflicts of interest that may be presented by a financial interest of an investigator. Specifically, Federal regulations require institutions to have policies and procedures in place to ensure that investigators disclose any significant financial interest that the institution reasonably determines could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct or reporting of institutional research funded. Simmons University utilizes InfoReady for ad-hoc disclosures, certifications when applying for federal funding, and on an annual basis for current funding recipients.
