Packing Checklist

We've taken the stress out of packing by curating a comprehensive checklist of what to bring — and what not to bring — to campus.

Every student room comes equipped with

All residence halls come equipped with

  • laundry facilities
  • student kitchens
  • lounges with TVs
  • pianos
  • study rooms
  • a quiet meditation room
  • a computer lab

Items to Discuss With Your Roommate(s)

You might decide you don't need two!

  • sound system
  • TV
  • curtains
  • standing lamps (Remember: No halogens, due to fire safety)
  • rugs
  • trash can and trash bags to fit
  • mini or microfridge

What to Bring

Not all of the items are required, but many students have found this list a helpful packing aid.

  • Sheets for regular twin-size bed
  • Comforter, blanket or quilt
  • Pillows/pillowcases
  • Mattress pad
  • Light bulbs
  • Under bed storage or closet organizer (Beds at their lowest level have a height of XX inches; beds at their highest level have a height of XX inches)
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Hand and/or bar soap
  • Flip-flops for the shower
  • Nail clippers
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Shower basket or caddy (to carry shampoo/conditioner, soap, etc., back and forth)
  • Hair dryer (must use less than 1000 watts of electricity)
  • Laundry basket or bag
  • Laundry detergent and other laundry aids
  • Drying rack
  • Backpack or bookbag
  • Desk lamp
  • Stapler
  • 3-hole punch
  • Stationery and stamps
  • Calculator
  • Pens, pencils, pencil sharpener
  • Calendar and planner
  • Ruler
  • Scotch tape
  • Bulletin/dry erase board

Note: approved appliances must use less than 1000 watts of electricity

  • Power strip with surge protector and on/off switch (do not pack extension cords)
  • Headphones
  • Laptop and charger
    All rooms have Ethernet (high speed internet) connections in them, and the entire campus is wireless
  • Alarm clock
  • Coffee maker (must have auto-shutoff)
  • Mini fridge (if not renting a microfridge
    Student-supplied mini fridges must be “energy-star compliant and no larger than 3.6 cubic feet
  • Three prong outlet adapters (for some rooms in Simmons & Morse)
    Feel free to call our office to check if your room will need one
  • Key chain
  • Address book
  • Money (large amounts should be kept safely in the bank)
  • Quarters for laundry and/or vending machine (both also use Fenway Cash)
  • Prescription medication
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Ear plugs
  • 3M command hooks
  • Decorations such as posters or framed pictures 
  • Calendar
  • Reusable water bottle and/or travel mug
  • Bug spray
  • Basic cleaning supplies (dish soap, cleaning wipes)
  • Clothing hangers
  • Dishes (plate, bowl, cup, fork, knife, spoon, can opener, sauce pan)
  • Lamps (Simmons and Morse don't have overhead lighting)

What NOT to Bring

These items are not allowed in the residence halls, so please leave them home.

  • Upholstered furniture that does not have fire-retardant labels
  • Cooking appliances other than a mini or microfridge (however, you can bring coffee makers with automatic shutoffs). This includes microwaves (you must rent a microfridge if you want a microwave in your room), popcorn poppers, electric grills, hot pots, etc.
  • Halogen lamps
  • Candles, incense or any other type of flame or burning unit (These items are all considered fire hazards)
  • Car (There is no student parking available for residents, it is extremely difficult to find street parking, and is very expensive to finance parking options. Most students use the public transportation system.)
  • Hammer, nails and power drills (They damage the walls and any damages will be deducted from your housing deposit)
  • Pets (with the exception of fish that live in a 5-gallon tank or smaller)
  • Weapons
  • Illegal drugs
  • Tobacco products. Simmons is a tobacco-free campus.
  • Air conditioners (fans are allowed)
  • Space heaters
